Probation, intermediate sanctions, parole and reentry programs are examples of community-based corrections. You will examine the structures of community-based corrections and how they are constantly changing. You will also analyze how the victims’ rights movement has affected community-based corrections and the decisions.

Probation

Adult probation is the most widely used correctional option in the U.S. You will cover the origins and development of probation and where it is going, as well as explore how probation is administered and the basic functions of a probation officer. Students will also examine the rights of probationers and the effectiveness of probation on criminals. Does it work? Do people follow the rules? What can we do to make probation more effective?

Students will learn current community-based correction trends and examine the effectiveness of probation -- the most widely used correctional option in communities across America.
